Each volunteer plays a vital role in Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University's focus of providing quality patient care and assistance to each of our patients, their loved ones and caregivers.

Volunteering at Winship Your Service Changes Lives

At Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, your positive involvement and genuine concern can work wonders for our patients. Volunteer opportunities at Winship are entirely patient-focused.

You have the ability to change a patient's emotional outlook, provide hope to a family or simply lend a helping hand so that our staff can focus on the patient's care and treatment.

Benefits

Volunteers who have worked at Winship say the greatest benefit they receive is their own sense of accomplishment and personal satisfaction. At Winship, we recognize our volunteers' time, talents and dedication with the following:

  • Free parking at Winship locations while performing volunteer work
  • Use of the Wellness Center at Winship Cancer Institute (Clifton Road campus) and Winship at Emory Midtown
  • Opportunities to attend organizational events, activities, and educational sessions
  • Invitation to volunteer recognition events
  • Career and education letters of reference after a minimum of six months of service
  • Immunizations from Emory Employee Health. (All volunteers are required to receive a seasonal flu shot during the months of September – March. In addition, all new volunteers will be required to take a TB test.)

All volunteers are required to wear a uniform during their shift. NOTE: The cost of the uniform is $25.

Requirements

In order to volunteer at Winship Cancer Institute, volunteers must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Commit to fulfilling a 6 month period of volunteer service with a minimum of 8 hours per month (the equivalent of two 4 hour shifts per month).
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Complete and submit a volunteer application
  • Schedule and complete a volunteer interview
  • Complete and pass a criminal background check
  • Provide immunization records that include measles, mumps and rubella (two immunization dates); varicella/chickenpox (either two immunization dates or titer results proving immunity); Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis); and an up to date flu vaccine for current season or receive the flu vaccine from Emory Employee Health (September – March)
  • Attend onsite new volunteer orientation and complete online orientation component once accepted into the program
  • Complete and pass a TB test, if applicable

Cancer Survivors and Caregivers

In addition to the above requirements, volunteers who are cancer survivors are required to have been out of treatment for at least 6 months prior to volunteering. Additionally, volunteers who have had a family member recently pass away from cancer will need to delay volunteering for at least 12 months.
